Solutions - Business Process Improvement Programs

Our Business Process Improvement Programs are about understanding and improving your processes so that you can position your organization to effectively and efficiently satisfy customer needs, improve profitability and comply with industry regulations. They’re also about managing those assets, so that you can continuously improve the process without starting from scratch.

Are you planning an acquisition or in the midst of a merger? Documenting your “As-Is” business processes can help you quickly identify the best-of-breed “To-Be” process that will allow you to realize the benefits of the reorganization. Without a comprehensive understanding of current business processes, you’re at risk of losing important institutional knowledge. We work with you to gather information in focused modeling sessions led by an experienced facilitator. Subject matter experts from your organization provide the information.

The government has mandated the need to document financial processes in the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. With the help of DEA and System Architect, you can build business process maps that help you see where your risks are, and then how to institute controls to mitigate those risks. As one of our clients said, “I wish we’d had these process maps when we were trying to identify our risk areas for compliance….it makes the risk areas easier to spot. But at least we now have the right documentation.”

The lifeblood of a company is the products it offers to its customers. But the process of developing products is time-consuming and comprehensive in its organizational scope. A new product may require work process changes in virtually every area of an organization – from home office to distributors. For insurance companies, the need to meet licensing regulations and for actuarial analysis complicates product development even further. DEA has worked with insurance companies during the product development process and used models to help the client understand its new product offering in more depth, while at the same time developing an understanding of process and system changes that would be needed once the new product goes to market.

Companies instituting quality programs, such as Six Sigma TM, can benefit from business process modeling. DEA helps you look at the current business process, defining the flows, the steps, the handoffs, the costs and the timing, and examine technology currently used to support the process. We assess opportunities for improvement, always keeping in mind that the goal is end-to-end process integration, the elimination of waste and improvement of efficiency.

DEA believes in creating business process artifacts in a repository-based modeling tool. That allows us to create a knowledge asset library so that you can manage those assets and preserve your company’s intellectual property even after we’re gone. That means you don’t have to start over the next time you want to improve your process.

A Business Process Management System (BPMS) is a model and rules driven work flow software technology that allows you to automate complex business processes. Examples include processes such as insurance underwriting, disputed invoices, mortgage application credit checking, claims processing, and similar processes that require assessing multiple applications and manual intervention. A graphical model of the process is created that shows the flow of the business process you want to automate. This model is imported into the BPM software which then directs its execution. DEA can significantly reduce the risks of BPM implementations and get these types of projects into production faster. We do assessment, requirements, high level design and business rules analysis to ensure a successful project.

How Does a Typical Business Process Improvement Project Work?
The table illustrates the phases of a typical project and the work products each phase produces. How long do these tasks take? Of course, that depends on the project scope. But as an example, we participated in Sarbanes-Oxley documentation for a business area in a project that lasted approximately 6 weeks. At another time, DEA played a key role on a new product development team that began with product design, went through designing a new business process, to identifying requirements for system change, and finally to managing the end-to-end test phase. This project lasted well over a year.
